Why is wine in the US so expensive?
Something I've learned bringing my wine to market.
The main reason wine in the US is so expensive is because:
1) Wine is sold 3 times before it hits shelves. Three tier system with the middle men taking a cut.
2) Old school rules (mafia) keep these laws in place to protect the middle men.
3) If each layer takes a cut that means the producer doesn't make as much and the retail cost is too high.
If you want to support wineries, especially small ones, buy DTC (direct to consumer) or in a tasting room. This means the winery and you are making a transaction without the middle men.
