OIV meaning in wine

The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) is an intergovernmental scientific and technical organization for the vine and wine sector. Created in 1924, it has been headquartered at the Hôtel Bouchu dit d’Esterno in Dijon since its centenary year in 2024 and comprised 51 member states as of June 2026. In May 2026, the OIV reported that its members accounted for approximately 90% of global vineyard surface area, 88% of global wine production, and 75% of global wine consumption. The organization develops international standards for viticultural and oenological practices, establishes analytical methods, publishes sector statistics, and coordinates scientific work among its members. Its resolutions and recommendations inform national rules and international wine trade, although member governments decide how to implement them.
