ÖWT (Österreichische Traditionsweingüter) is a prestigious association of traditional Austrian winemakers established in 1992, originally encompassing the renowned wine regions of Kremstal, Kamptal, Traisental, and Wagram, with Carnuntum joining in 2019. This organization represents Austria’s commitment to preserving winemaking traditions while promoting quality standards and terroir expression. The association’s most significant contribution to Austrian wine culture is the 1ÖWT classification system, which identifies wines produced from Erste Lagen (first vineyard sites). These designated vineyard sites represent Austria’s premier terroir locations, carefully selected based on their exceptional soil composition, microclimate, and historical significance in wine production. As of 2018, there were 72 Ersten Lagen officially recognized under this classification system.
