Pad filtration is a clarification technique used in winemaking to remove suspended particles, sediment, and unwanted materials from wine by passing it through specialized filter pads. The process involves forcing wine under pressure through a series of filter pads made from materials such as cellulose, diatomaceous earth, or synthetic fibers arranged in a filter press system. These pads contain microscopic pores that trap particles while allowing the liquid to pass through, resulting in clearer, more stable wine. The filtration grade varies depending on the pad type, ranging from coarse filtration (removing larger particles like grape skins and pulp) to fine filtration (eliminating yeast cells and bacteria). Modern pad filtration systems typically use cellulose-based pads rather than historical asbestos materials for safety reasons. The technique is particularly effective for removing sediment that naturally forms during fermentation and aging processes.
