Uvaggio meaning in Italian wine

Uvaggio is an Italian wine term for a blend made from more than one grape variety. It contrasts with a monovarietal wine, which is made from a single variety. In practice, uvaggio emphasizes the blend as the unit of style: one grape may supply structure, another aroma, another color, acidity, or softness. Classic Italian examples include many Chianti wines and numerous Super Tuscan blends. Do not use Brunello di Montalcino as an example of uvaggio, because Brunello is a Sangiovese-based monovarietal wine under its appellation rules.
