Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) measures the amount of oxygen that passes through a wine closure over time, typically expressed in milligrams of oxygen per day. This critical parameter directly influences wine aging and development in the bottle. Natural cork closures exhibit the most variable OTR, ranging from 0.0001 to 0.01 mg/day depending on cork quality, density, and treatment. This variability explains why bottles from the same vintage can develop differently, creating the phenomenon known as bottle variation. Synthetic corks generally provide more consistent OTR values, typically around 0.001-0.005 mg/day, while screw caps offer the lowest and most uniform transmission rates at approximately 0.0001 mg/day. The ideal OTR depends on wine style and intended aging period. Red wines benefit from slightly higher oxygen transmission for proper tannin evolution and color stability, while white wines and sparkling wines require minimal oxygen exposure to preserve freshness and prevent premature oxidation.
