Steinfeder

Steinfeder meaning in Wachau wine

Steinfeder is the lightest classification within Austria’s prestigious Wachau wine region’s three-tier quality system. Named after the delicate feathery grass (Stipa pennata) that grows on the region’s steep terraced vineyards, Steinfeder wines must be produced from grapes with a harvest must weight between 15 and 17°KMW (Klosterneuburger Mostwaage). This Austrian measurement scale corresponds to approximately 73-83° Oechsle. The finished wines cannot exceed 11% alcohol by volume, and chaptalization is strictly prohibited, ensuring the wines maintain their naturally light character. These regulations, established by the Vinea Wachau association, guarantee that Steinfeder wines represent the most delicate expression of Wachau’s terroir. Typically produced from Grüner Veltliner and Riesling, Steinfeder wines are characterized by their fresh acidity, subtle fruit flavors, and elegant minerality derived from the region’s primary rock soils. They are designed for immediate consumption and pair exceptionally well with light Austrian cuisine, seafood, and as aperitifs. The classification sits below Federspiel and Smaragd in the Wachau hierarchy, offering wine enthusiasts an authentic taste of Austria’s most celebrated white wine region in its most approachable form.
