Caliche is a sedimentary rock or hardened soil layer characterized by high concentrations of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) that forms through the accumulation and cementation of calcium and magnesium carbonates. In Argentine viticulture, caliche deposits are particularly significant in the Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo subregions of Mendoza, typically found at elevations between 3,000-4,500 feet above sea level. This geological formation creates unique growing conditions as the calcium carbonate deposits possess moderate water retention properties, allowing vine roots to penetrate and access moisture reserves during dry periods. The presence of caliche influences both vineyard management and wine character—producers report that wines from caliche-influenced soils often exhibit a distinctive chalky minerality and enhanced textural complexity. The calcium-rich environment can also affect soil pH levels, typically creating slightly alkaline conditions that influence nutrient uptake and vine development. Mendoza winemakers increasingly value caliche terroir for premium wine production, particularly for varieties like Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, as they believe the mineral composition translates into wines with greater structure, refined tannins, and distinctive terroir expression that reflects the unique geological heritage of the high-altitude Andean foothills.
