A Methuselah is a large format wine bottle with a capacity of 6 liters, equivalent to eight standard 750ml bottles. Named after the biblical patriarch known for his extraordinary longevity, this bottle size reflects the wine industry’s tradition of using biblical and historical names for large formats. The Methuselah is also known as an Imperial in certain regions, particularly when referring to Bordeaux wines. Large format bottles like the Methuselah offer several advantages for wine aging and presentation. The increased volume-to-surface-area ratio means less oxygen exposure per unit of wine, potentially allowing for slower, more graceful aging. The larger mass also provides better temperature stability, protecting the wine from rapid temperature fluctuations.
