Vino patero means “foot-trodden wine” in Spanish and refers to rustic, often homemade or small-scale wine made by crushing grapes by foot. The term comes from pata (“foot”) and is especially associated with traditional winemaking in parts of South America as well as Spanish-language rural wine culture. Foot treading is gentle enough to crush berries without aggressively breaking seeds, which helps limit bitter tannin extraction. Today, vino patero is usually a cultural or artisanal term rather than a regulated commercial category.
