What is a wine cellar?
A wine cellar is a room or dedicated space used to store wine in cool, stable conditions, away from heat and strong light. It can be underground, but an above-ground room with suitable climate control can serve the same purpose. The conditions matter more than the location.

Neither name guarantees good storage. A warm basement is not automatically a useful cellar, and a cabinet intended mainly to chill bottles for serving may not meet your long-term storage needs. Check the actual conditions and, for a wine fridge, the model’s intended use.
Do you need a cellar to keep wine?
Not for every bottle. Start with how much wine you keep and when you plan to drink it. For bottles intended for near-term drinking, a cool, dark place away from large temperature swings may be enough. For longer storage, consistent conditions become more important—and not every wine improves with age.
